The first, slowly becoming a classic, is called 'Bowling Alone' by Robert Putnam...in it he explores the breakdown of modern society and highlights how and why social capital is important for society. The other book, very well referenced with lots of accessible statistics, is 'The High Price of Materialism' by Tim Kasser, which explores the detrimental affect our present capitalist value system is having on individuals.
